EVOLUTION OF INDIAN HM AMBASSADOR (AMBY)
over the years the Hindustan Ambassador enjoyed large number of celebrity fans across India. The list included almost all former prime ministers, including the likes of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. The car became a sensation for most parts of 80’s and the 90′.But with the dawn of the new century ,India began to see a changing trend . A car which used to be sold by the hundreds in most dealerships per month , soon failed to even reach double figures. An end was slowly in sight, unless HM did something about it.
As the 21st century blossomed , new and more user friendly cars like the Maruti 800 began to dominate the Indian automobile scene. These cars were light and easy to manoeuvre in the ever increasing city traffic.Though they didn’t provide the same comfort as the Ambassador, they seemed to be ideally suited for the life in the city.
Soon the Ambassador began to be phased out from Indian Roads. HM did try to put up a fight by bringing cars like the Ambassador Classic and Grand. But what the Indian customers really wanted was a change of face, and Hindustan Motors failed to deliver.
Their last fight was with the Ambassador Grand which provided better interiors, and features like power window and center locking.Though people wished to see a small car, or a hatchback from the manufacturer , that was not to be. Soon the losses began to pile up and the company failed to even provide wages to their employees.
In 2014 , The Uttarpad plant which saw almost all the generation of Ambassadors that had been made made , was shutdown bringing an end to the long 56 year reign of the car in India.
